You can check it out here.

#2. CNA Exam Cram

The CNA Exam Cram was a close second due to it being a little out of date and not fully compliant with the NNAAP standard.

Offering 2 multiple choice practice tests, this study guide is absolutely worth the price. Ultimately, we recommend buying both the Official CNA Study Guide and the CNA Exam Prep together.

By the way, we are not affiliated with this book regardless of the title.

The CNA Exam Prep is an extremely well designed CNA study guide with 244 page that offers 4 50 question practice tests.

Furthermore, this study guide gives you flashcards, practical procedures, and more. Although it lacks on the review material, it makes up for a 2 solid practice tests. However, your best bet is either the Official CNA Study Guide or the CNA Exam Cram study guide.

#4. Nursing Assistant/Nurse Aide Exam

The Nursing Assistant/Nurse Aide Exam is a well designed CNA study Guide and is well loved by many in the industry.

However, we felt that this one lacked a little in the practice test since it didn’t cover the practical exam as well as we thought it should. However, the other sections are excellent and worth a read if you are confident in your practical examination skills.

You can check it out here.

How to Take Our CNA Practice Test

With each question comes a category. Taking after the NNAAP examination standard, we have grouped each test sample question into one of the 9 categories to include:

  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Basic Nursing Skills
  • Restorative Skills
  • Emotional and Mental Needs
  • Spiritual and Cultural Needs
  • Communication
  • Client Rights
  • Legal and Ethical Behavior
  • Member of the Health Care Team

Although your total score is the most important score in passing the written exam, as you prepare for your official test, you need to know where you are weak and where you need to improve. For this reason, we have broken each question into the above groups so that you can have an indication of which area you are weakest on and where the need to study more prior to taking the written portion of the test.

How to Take a Nursing Assistant Written Practice Exam

The biggest mistake that someone seeking their nursing assistant certification makes is that they don’t take practice test opportunities seriously.

In many cases, someone stumbles upon one while just searching the internet and quickly takes it. But the purpose of a pretest is to help you gauge your current level and help you to decide whether or not you are prepared.

So, once you find a professional a good one online, you need to plan out a time to take it. Don’t worry, it isn’t going anywhere.

Once you are ready, pretend that it is the official exam. Don’t take this while you’re eating or while your spouse is talking to you. Close the door, sit down, and imagine that this is the real exam.

Another benefit is to time yourself. Because each state is different, the amount of time you have to take the examination will be different. So, find out how long you have and make sure you stay under that when you practice. This will help you feel a little anxiety and help you to manage your time better.

Also, remember this too when you are using one of our above CNA Study Guides. Treat these nursing resources with the time and effort they need. When you finally get to the back of the CNA Study Guide and take the practice exam, ensure you treat it like the real NNAAP Text. Give yourself ample time. Don’t keep looking at the answers and don’t let external things interrupt your concentration. If you do this, your practice test results will be a better indicator of where you are with regards to the official CNA exam.

After Your Test is Complete

Once you have completed your test, you should focus on three things:

  • a. Your Total Score
  • b. Your Category Score
  • c. Recommendations on How to Improve

Your total score will help you to see exactly how you would have done if this were the real examination.

The Category score is a breakdown of each question within a category and will help you to decide which area you are weakest on. We would highly recommend that you take the time to rehash your weakest category or if this is the beginning of your study preparation, that you spend more time on that particular category.

Finally, at the end of the test, depending on your total score and your category scores, we will provide you with our best recommendation on your next steps in preparation. We are many different study guides on the market. Some have excellent quizzes while others have phenomenal information but cost more. Based on your results, will give you the best option moving forward.

Written Version of the Certified Nursing Assistant’s Practice Test Answer Key

Below is the answer key for the CNA exam pretest to include the explanations.

  1. (C) DNR stands for “Do Not Resuscitate.” ADL stands for “Activities of Daily Living” and NPO stands for “Nil Per Os” which is Latin for nothing by mouth. LAO is a made up term to throw you off since it should be unrecognizable and lead you to select it if you did not know what the other options stood for.

  1. (A) When brushing a patient’s teeth, you have the greatest chance of coming in contract with mucus or blood. Therefore gloves would be appropriate for this situation more so than others. Remember, the purpose of gloves is to mitigate the spread of disease and to protect yourself.

  1. (A) Wrinkles in the bed can cause extra pressure to certain areas, thus causing a higher risk for pressure sore development. Therefore, it is important to make the bed correctly and minimize the amount of creases or wrinkles. After changing the sheets, you should always check to verify there are no wrinkles.

  1. (A) It is unethical and legally wrong to take the money. Therefore, any option that will create the turnover of money would be incorrect. Reporting the family would be incorrect because they haven’t done anything legally wrong and this will only create a bad situation.

  1. (C) It is the responsibility of the CNA tasked to perform the job to ensure privacy is met before commencing.

  1. (A) Dairy is one of the major sources of vitamin D and would be the most likely food to deliver the necessary vitamin D.

  1. (B) 120 minutes divided by 3 equals 40 minutes. Therefore, for that CNA, it takes them 40 minutes per person. Therefore 2 people should take 80 minutes.

  1. (C) Over time you may start to develop a good relationship with the patient and you may feel as though you can call them by their first name, however you must maintain a professional level at all times and therefore should call them Mr., Mrs, or Miss followed by their last name. Furthermore, if you are found to call certain patients one way and other another, then this could be perceived as favoritism.

  1. (A) A stroke on the left side of the brain may cause a basic loss of muscle control on the right side of the patient’s body. You will notice droop in their facial features and weakness in the limbs on that side of the body.

  1. (A) It is required that a patients intake and output records be recorded and totaled at least once a shift.

  1. (B) The Fowlers position is the best position for a patient who is having trouble breathing. This position allows the removal of pressure on the lungs from gravity and will allow better flow. The Trendelenberg position is used when doing abdominal surgery. The Semi-Fowler is more appropriate for a patient that is tube feeding so as to ensure the fluids do not recede back.

  1. (D) It is important that you keep your calm and coolly remove yourself from the situation and report it to the nurse in charge. All other options will only escalate the situation, thus causing more problems for both the facility and the patient.

  1. (C) All other options would be the responsibility of a RN or LNA. Remember and CNA cannot give medication or prescribe treatment.

  1. (A). Most CNA injuries occur at the back due to improper techniques in lifting or transporting patients. It is extremely important that proper transportation techniques are used so as to reduce the amount of strain on the back and place more on the legs. With a weakened back or back injury, a CNA will not be able to perform their job adequately.

  1. (B) Signs of impending passing is an irregular and weakening pulse, a decrease in breathing, cool and moist skin, etc. These are not all inclusive. However, the listed signs would preclude you from choosing the other options.

  1. (B) Heimlich is the appropriate response for a chocking victim. The others are very far fetched and would not apply except for the throat clear which should be an initial check for an infant, however an infant would never be a resident.

  1. (A) A person’s culture is very important and can dictate what they eat, how they act and what types of treatment they will have. Therefore a cultural preference must be considered in the plan of care.

  1. (A) There are 30 ml per ounce. Therefore 30 times 8 equals 240

  1. (C) If a patient or resident becomes uncontrollable and unruly, then they can become a danger to themselves or others. Therefore it is important to get help immediately, however the most appropriate person for this type of situation is a RN or your Charge Nurse. The nurse can access the situation and if medication or restraint is needed, they can make that decision.

  1. (C) This is actually a tricky question, however the right answer is that you cannot share the patient’s information with family members unless specifically told you can. Furthermore, just because they are family members, does not give them a right to have access to a patient’s medical records. A third cousin shouldn’t even be in a situation to receive such information. A representative from the resident’s insurance company with the appropriate documents can have access to the doctor’s diagnosis considering they need proof in-order to fund the operation or care.

  1. (D) Chest pains can be a sign of a serious medical problem. Therefore, getting the right people there immediately, can save your patient’s life.

  1. (D) A soft touthette is important to use because it will reduce the possibility of liquids running down the esophagus and causing the unconscious patient from chocking.

  1. (D) If not sick, coughing is a reaction of the body to clear the throat of any debris or leftover. While giving them water may help alleviate the situation, the better answer is that they are having a problem swallowing.

  1. (B) Over time, the frequency range in which a patient can hear will lower starting with the higher frequency. Another term for high frequency is “High pitch.” This can affect the way you communicate with the patient and should be recognized by both parties.

  1. (B) Even though a patient is being restrained for their own safety, it in the CNA’s job to ensure that they are still in good health. Chafing of the skin, due to a tight restraint can cause a health problem if not monitored and taken care of.

  1. (D) There is nothing to preclude you from answering the question however it is important that you do not go on to push your beliefs any further. If you were to ignore the patient, you can hurt your relationship with them. The same goes with telling them you prefer not to answer the question. It is in your right to say this, however, the question was what would be the best answer.

  1. (C) The role and responsibilities of an ombudsman is to work with the nursing home so as to protect a patient or client’s rights

  1. (D) In most cases a dietary drink has been prescribed and can therefore be given to the patient as needed. You as a CNA do not have the authority to prescribe vitamins. Furthermore, giving a patient more food will not help since they didn’t finish their first meal. Also, a patient does not have the ability to reject food or required nutrients if prescribed by a nurse or doctor.

  1. (C) The patient does have the right to refuse non-life threatening care and therefore can reject your order of brushing teeth. However, after you have chosen to respect their right, you need to inform the nurse that ordered you to clean his teeth so that they are aware of the status of your tasking and overall hygiene of the patient.

  1. (B) Decubitus ulcer or pressure sore, usually starts with redness and then shows blanching and finally will rupture. Bleeding will come with the rupture but that is a later stage of a decubitus ulcer.

  1. (B) If the patient is weak in the left side, then you should start with the left arm. This is because it is more difficult with the second arm then the first.

  1. (B) The Nurse Practitioner is the only one on this list that is licensed to prescribe medical care. A physician can also do this however they were not on the list. A Nursing Assistant cannot prescribe medical care but perform certain duties and administer certain prescriptions if ordered to do so.

  1. (C) When filling out a medical record, you cannot use a pencil. This is because a pencil can easily be erased and incorrect information could be added by someone else. The ability to change the status of a medical record can be extremely dangerous to a patient.

  1. (C) The process of aging occurs when there is a normal decline in senses and body function. Not all people develop Alzheimer’s and aging is not predefined by a numerical value.

  1. (B) The upper thigh is the safest place when moving a patient. All other places have a higher probability of removal.

  1. (D) Range of Motion exercises work the muscle and the joint at the same time. Usually used to maintain and resident’s normal range of motion.

  1. (A) The patient has a right to privacy and ANY discussion about their health or care falls under this right regardless as to whether or not it is specific or general. They do have a right to medical care, however; this is not an appropriate response for this situation.

  1. (D) All other options are apart of the Patients’ Bill of Rights except the ability to leave at “any time.” There are situations in which patients do not have the ability to admit themselves out of care. There are ways to go about allowing them out, however in certain situations, they do not have the ability to do this whenever they feel.

  1. (D) Oral should be the first place to take the patients temperature unless they are bleeding in the mouth or are unable to hold the thermometer in the right place. Then the next area would be rectal which is actually the most accurate place to take a reading.

  1. (D) If it is required that you shower a resident, then you must stay with them at all times during the process. Lack of required supervision can be considered a form of neglect. The showering chair is there for any time you feel as though it is needed. You can request that they stand, as long as you believe they are physically capable of doing so. There is nothing that says that you have to use a certain amount of towels.

  1. (B) The ability to communicate and have this communication private is an unalienable right to a resident and must be provided at all times.

  1. (B) There will be times when a patient will not be able to move but sheets still need to be changed. Therefore, when doing this process, ensure that the arm rail is raised on the unattended side. This is to ensure that safety is maintained for the patient at all times and that they don’t fall out when changing the sheets.

  1. (A) Ensure you are looking at them and that they are looking at you before you speak. In most cases, they can still hear, but not everything. Therefore, by looking at each other, they can see you lips and interpolate what you are saying. Furthermore, if you don’t look at them and they aren’t looking at you, then you won’t know if you know you are talking.

  1. (D) While timely care is important, a patient does not have a right given reduced cost.

  1. (C) Giving them audio and visual verification can help them to better understand what you are saying and help them to remember more. It also rules out the possibility of them not hearing you. By working with them instead of just labeling them, you will help them mentally and emotionally.

  1. (D) The best way to handle this question is with a professional response reminding the person of their grandparents rights and not discuss it further. While mentioning the residential home’s policy might be correct, it isn’t the best option. The right to privacy is truly the right of the patient and by saying it’s a policy of your facility, you are only placing blame on your facility for not allowing you to talk about it.

50. (D) Denial is the first stage to grief.

  1. For #19 the answer you have provided does not match the correct letter choice ….. but great otherwise! Thanks

  2. How do I know my score and I like the explanations but will be nice if you can specify the correct answer only.

  3. I was getting information to develop a final for the CNA class that I teach. I noticed a couple of errors on your test.

#16- the answer in Heimlich, but when clicked it shows that it’s incorrect and should be CPR
#33 – the correct answer should be pencil and erase, as neither of those are acceptable in a medical record.

    I appreciate your great test!
